Match reviews
The competition was 5 rounds of swiss - top 2 qualify
for the finals of the competition next month. I think
there were 25 entered in the competition.
Round 1 Vincent (insert last name here)
He's playing a blue white control deck with Mahamotti
as the kill. Cormac has given me much practice over
the years playing against this archetype & the
practice payed off. Won 2-1 comfortably - losing a
game mainly due to keeping a poor hand with no early
threats.

Round 2 Gary Cosgrave
Garys is playing Psychotog. Game 1 he gets a land
screw & i take full advantage. Game 2 he manages to
kill all my blockers & attack for lots. Game 3 is
very close. In the end necropolis won this game for
me. He was low in life & each turn I was able to block
the dreaded atog & sac the creature to the necropolis
for 2 points of damage to the head.

Round three Lee Murphy
Lee is playing another red green beats deck. as usual
with two similar beatdown decks it really was luck of
the draw here. I stole the first game from under
Lee's nose. For 5 turns I was on 3 life & he had a
firebolt in the graveyard. However he never drew the
extra burn & blurred mongoose went all the way (this
card is soooooooo good).

Round 4 Craig Brooks (Psychotog AGAIN)
This ended in a draw. Craig probably would have won
but it went to 5 extra turns & he couldn't get through
in time. My lonely Mogg Sentry saved the day after a
last turn hibernation nearly cleared the board.

Round 5 Patrick Walsh (yep thats our very own paddy)
Pat was playing the snaketongue deck that was
discussed on previous episodes of "Team5FU dominate
world magic". Unfortunately for Pat I had helped him
do up a decklist the evening before so I was a little
more prepared than others may have been for his deck.
In the end the match was very close. Games 1 & 2 were
over real quick with each deck doing what its supposed
to do in a militarily effecient manner. Game three
was very tight but eventually a Fat Werebear went all
the way (with a little help from a rage to finish).
Deck notes
The deck is designed to beat a control environment.
So many elements help against control & take advantage
of the fact that much removal at the moment is
targeted. The sentrys were key. I rarely lost a
match when i dropped a first turn sentry & had threats
to follow. You could see the agony on the control
players face when you cast a creature before your
attack phase & a sentry is on play. If a fires is in
play the pressure is twofold on them. Not countering
means a massive beating while countering turns little
mogg sentry into quite a nasty critter. Reckless
abandon him them & its a type 2 Ball Lightning.
Psychotog is a nasty matchup. The key is to put early
pressure on the psychotog. force them as often as
possible to use up cards to keep it alive. If i were
changing cards i'd put another FTK in the board &
maybe more burn. Don't be afraid to attack even if
your creature will die. You force them to use up
their card advantage just to keep the critter alive.
This means they take longer to reach critical mass for
that big attack. I never got to use the tangle
against the deck (although i had it in hand at end in
the match i drew).
Anyway i've bored you enough with my rantings. Just
one slop of the day & that was having to beat Pat to
qualify. I'll still sleep tonight though :)
regards
Noel
